prompt #8 against white nationalist video games

This topic is very hard for me to find answers for because there is little research done to really support my thoughts. But, for video games, there are not very many ways to prevent people to play video games and more specifically video games that support the white nationalist ideologies. Since most of these games are open sourced flash games developed and played online there are no types of rating system in place to regulate the age of those playing them.
When you look at mainstream games played on major platforms such as Xbox 360 or Playstation PS3 all the games that are produced have a rating system ranging from E (for everyone) to A0 (adults only), these are these two examples are the bottom rating and highest rated games. While these platforms are the most popular you do not see any games of a white nationalist manufacturer be made. This is because the companies of the platform regulate the games produced. So to say that these major platforms have a great stand against white nationalist games would be correct but the white nationalists are not trying to get their games produced on the platforms. While white nationalist video games are not making these major platforms, white nationalists are adopting games that are being produced to promote their ideologies. Take for example grand theft auto, this game allows the character to walk around and do what they want, white nationalist are taking their character and going around killing the minorities in the game. This is just one example of the games they are using. One major stoppage of underage people to playing this game is actually something done voluntarily by retailers. Using the rating system described above, games that are for rated M (for mature) are not being sold to minors or people without parental consent. There is no law regulating the sale of games in this rating by stores have decided to check Id’s themselves. “In 2000 83% of people buying a M rated game were not carded when buying it, in 2008 only 20% were not carded. But with only few games in these platforms white nationalist are not targeting these markets. They are going after the none regulated web games.
Websites that host open source gaming rarely have some time of age verification to play games that have graphic content. This makes controlling who plays games on these sites very hard. One way I have found these graphical and white nationalist racial games is just googling “shooting games” “racist games” “most racist games” and these hit lists are endless . When a someone clicks shooting games they are going to be brought to a list that has mostly games that have no racial agenda but there are many that a ran across that are racially motivated. One I kept getting was boarder patrol. One of the simplest games to play is one of the most popular shooting games. Its ease to find and ease of play is going to make a great game for a younger person to really like playing.

prompt #5- internet and spread of video games

The history of racial video games dates back well before the introduction of the internet, when video games were created and bought and played with a physical disk (or in that time, floppy disk). At this time video games were rarely played because if you didn’t have a copy of the disk you weren’t playing. Fast forward to the days of the internet and you have the ease of logging onto your computer and playing countless games at any time of the day. But lets back track a little bit, at the start of the internet you had dial up internet and the video quality was very raw. This allowed for very slow and basic games. One of the most known game at that time would be Custards Revenge.

Custards Revenge is a video game that has a white man (general custard) and an Indian women. General Custard is naked and has a erection, where as the Indian women is also naked and has very defined breasts to show that she is naked. It is also important to point out that she is tied to a poll. The point of this game is for general Custard to dodge arrows all the while getting closer to the Indian women and to win the game you have to get close enough and rape her without being hit by an arrow. This game shows that at the very advent of the internet there were people making video games. More importantly we see the white nationalist ideology of a white man raping a minor (Indian).

We move on to the present day of internet technology though. With the increase in availability and connectivity to the internet, it is possible to be on the web 24/7 anywhere. Whether it be at home on your computer or on your smart phone you can connect and play video games. While writing this post currently on the Android market there are no games that have racial motivated titles to be downloaded onto my phone but that does not mean there are none available with different names and a hidden agenda in the game.

Going back to the computer though we have seen the increase in graphics on video games on the internet which is very scary. The realistic graphics I have seen on some games makes you feel like you are actually watching a real life movie rather than a video game. How I see this becoming a problem is with the youth seeing this game and playing it and with its great graphics think that what is being depicted in the game something that is ok to do in real life, where it could be from hate crimes, assault, murder or rape.

The internet has done some definite marvels to our society today but from what we have learned in class it has became a gateway for white nationalists to spread their ideologies and beliefs faster then ever before. Continuing this idea we can say their ideologies are becoming involved with more and more video games today. And the ease for getting ahold of these games are becoming easier and easier each day. Kids now are growing up relying on the computer and internet for everyday functions and they have a hard time determining what is acceptable and not acceptable. For example look at martinlutherking.org and the youth may think it is a true factual website but rather it is a cloaked site. Video games are not as cloaked as this but in the minds of a child they may think a video game where there is a lot of violence is ok but the only killing going on is the killing of minorities.

racial genocide

The use of racial genocide in video games is very evident. When you look at the history of the video games created and played by white nationalists you will see they are all very violence based games. Look "ethnic cleansing" the video game. It is a first person shooter game where you are a white male and his mission is to kill everyone on each level. The only people on each level are minorities (blacks, latinos and jews), basically other then killing everyone there is no real objective to the game. This you can say is a very racial genocide game. This game is well known because it was one of the first games to be downloaded onto peoples computer in 2002 but games now are being flashed so they can be played straight on the web and are easily accessible to anyone.

Another example would be boarder patrol, this game is just a person shooting a shotgun gun at mexican characters running across the boarder to what is portrayed as America. You see fat mexicans and i think the most controversial a pregnant mexican women. These images of the mexican people are portraying the stereotypes that the white nationalists have depicted as typical mexicans.

When you google "most racist video games" the top hit list is huge and many games ive grown up playing on there and it surprises me to what i find i used to play. Such as Pokemon, this game was created in japan and though most of it has no racial intention there are a Pokemon (characters) that are depicted in a racial way for example Jynx was based on a fashion style called yamanba from Japan. A decade ago a handful of Japanese girls started trying to emulate the looks of Hollywood starlets with blonde hair, light makeup, and even fake tans. This style, called Ganguro, further evolved into another style called yamanba. Yamanba ditches the semi-realistic coloring for an even more distorted look with brown skin, stark white makeup on the eyes and lips – problem is some yamanba sort of look like they are wearing blackface make-up ala Little Black Sambo, a series of books popular many years ago. Jynx has been re-colored purple for most of her (his?) Western appearances, but stays black in Japan. )(http://gamrfeed.vgchartz.com/story/87729/top-ten-unintentionally-racist-videogames/). This is somewhat minor to some of the video games that are available now but the fact that a game intended for young children have the consequences of starting the acceptability of racial thoughts. Though this game has no killing or genocide thoughts in it, the game still portrays the white nationalist ideology.

The very most disturbing game made that promotes genocide is a game called "Super Columbine Masssacure RPG! This game is a recreation of the shootings at Columbine High School in Colorado in 1999. The goal of this game is to kill students and teachers. The connection of this game and the white nationalist ideology is the lone wolf approach where individuals go out and create terror on their own for the good of whites. The shootings at Columbine was a national tragedy but it was created into a game.

Though video games can have a lot of educational purposes and also great enjoyment, they can also have many hidden ideologies behind them, or in even more rare cases have a down right obvious message of racial genocide
